Sharp Stuff!
I use spokeshaves and drawknives quite often to rough out my necks. Yes, you can form a neck on a router table with the right jigs and I have even used a belt sander to create a few. But the most enjoyable time I spend making necks is usually with a drawknife or a spokeshave. It's how i originally started making them years ago, and it's a little like when you bend a guitar side with heat and steam the first time: it's magic. Generally I finish the neck up with sandpaper, card scrapers and rasps, but the start and most of the shaping is with the drawknife and especially the spokeshave.
