Building Electric Guitars: How to Make Solid Body, Hollow-Body, and Semi-Accoustic Guitars and Bass Guitars

This book is a gem, as the title suggests you will learn about the construction and techniques to build many types of electric guitars.  Solidbody (my edition came with a full size plan), semi-acoustic, and hollow-body guitars.  I didn’t even know the difference between semi-acoustic and hollow body guitars until I read this book.  In addition there is a simple yet useful introduction to the theory of pickups and their constructions.

Koch describes himself in the book as an amateur himself, and explains that in Europe particularly Switzerland where he hails from, calling himself a luthier or working full time professionally as a builder is tightly regulated.  However, luckily there is no such restriction on anyone being an author, therefore he set out to publish this book.  Originally produced in German, the English translation is well done.  There are no unclear or strangely translated passages, and the photography is clear if a bit smaller than I would hope. It is possible to order this book with a CD and full size plan from some vendors, although in my case I bought this when only the book was available and Martin had not created the CD yet.

He provides a run-through of all the mentioned builds, although interestingly he does not repeat instructions that does apply from one model to the next.  Another words, certain techniques once illustrated are not repeated on the next build even though you will need to use that technique as part of the alternative build.  Very well done, and has many photo illustrations to demonstrate techniques.
